Seismic loading calculations and Restraint Design
Unfortunately our beautiful country is situated on many seismic faultlines.
Earthquakes are a grim reality to us. The government is well aware of the dangers and it was the 1931 earthquake of Napier that begun the process of creating New Zealand Standards of construction.
Today the successors of those original standards incorporate the regulation and requirement to restrain mechanical plant, tanks, pipework and other notable hazards so that catastrophic failure under earthquake loadings is considered.
Calculations are generally performed to ensure that support fixings within buildings are capable of withstanding an earthquake loading based on historical and empirical data for each regions of New Zealand.
